Passengers at Vancouver International Airport may notice the presence of an unusually high number of emergency personnel working Tuesday, but the airport says this is nothing to worry about.
The airport says it is conducting its annual emergency training, intended to test and improve emergency response capabilities.
“Passengers and visitors may notice exercise-related activity on the airfield and in the terminal between approximately 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Sept. 15,” YVR said in a news release.
“Exercise participants and volunteers may be portraying distressed or injured individuals as part of the training scenario.”
Participants will be clearly identified with vests, and signs will be posted throughout the airport to let passengers know what is going on, the airport says.
The exercise will involve the simulation of an aircraft emergency, with a coordinated response at the airport and throughout the Lower Mainland, YVR says.
“These activities require extensive collaboration across airport teams, emergency responders, airlines, government agencies, first responders, and other partners,” the airport said.
“By training together regularly and in realistic scenarios, we are able to test procedures, strengthen coordination, and enhance preparedness to help ensure our airport community is ready to respond to any situation at YVR safely and effectively.”
The training is required by Transport Canada. More than 400 participants from 25 agencies will take part in this year’s exercise.
The airport says normal operations will not be affected.
