Homicide investigators are still trying to determine why a 28-year-old man was shot dead in south Surrey Friday morning.
Four people are facing murder charges in the death of Yuvraj Goyal, who has been described as βa community member with no history of police contact.β
Goyal was shot in front of his home in the area of 164 Street and 10 Avenue around 8:45 a.m. on June 7. He died at the scene.
Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) Sgt. Timothy Pierotti says, at this time, thereβs nothing to explain why he would be targeted. Investigators are trying to determine a motive, as well as whether this was a case of mistaken identity.
βWeβre asking anybody who did have recent contact with him, anyone who would have any information about how he came to be the victim of a homicide, to contact IHIT immediately,β he said.
Shortly after the shooting, the Surrey RCMP was notified about a vehicle fire in the area of McMillan Road near 185 Street. Investigators are still trying to determine if the two incidents were linked.
It was only hours later that police announced four arrests had been made in connection with the homicide. Video posted online shows the suspects being taken into custody in the middle of the intersection at Highway 17 and 104 Avenue.
Manvir Basram, 23, Sahib Basra, 20, Harkirat Jhutty, 23, and Keilon Francois, 20, are all charged with first-degree murder. No other details about the suspects have been provided at this time.
Pierotti says IHIT is looking into whether there are any ties to gangs.
βItβs certainly something that weβre going to be looking into,β he said. βWeβre working with the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU-BC) to share information to determine whether there were any gang ties to these four suspects that were arrested, and if so, what role did that play in this homicide.β
