UVic Vikes forward Shadynn Smid takes next step, signs with Vancouver Bandits

A key piece of University of Victoria Vikes success is taking the next step to the professional ranks.

The Vancouver Bandits announced April 28 that they have signed forward Shadynn Smid, a four-year standout with the Vikes, ahead of the 2026 Canadian Elite Basketball League season.

Smid, a 6-foot-7 forward from Duncan, became a cornerstone of the Vikes program during his collegiate career in Victoria. Over four seasons, he helped guide the team to four consecutive U SPORTS Final 8 appearances, capturing three Canada West championships and a national title in the 2024-25 season.

The signing marks Smid’s first professional contract, a milestone that reflects both his individual development and the sustained success of the Vikes program.

Bandits head coach and general manager Kyle Julius praised Smid’s readiness to contribute at the next level.

“Shadynn is a rare combination of elite athleticism and growing skill. He was one of the best players in Canada and we think he can impact winning for us right away,” Julius said in a release.

“Shadynn is an explosive athlete who brings a relentless motor every time he steps on the floor. He embodies our team’s culture and we are excited to get to work with him.”

Smid earned Canada West Second Team All-Star honours in the 2025-26 season after starting 25 of 26 games and averaging 13.4 points and a team-high 5.6 rebounds per game.

Before arriving in Victoria, he developed locally on Vancouver Island at Cowichan Secondary (now Quw’utsun Secondary). Internationally, Smid has also represented Canada, competing in 3×3 basketball at the 2025 Junior Pan American Games.

Smid will join the Bandits for training camp beginning May 5, with fans set to get an early look at the roster during a preseason game May 9 in Langley.
