Out-of-control wildfire prompts evacuation order, alerts around Pemberton area

An evacuation order has been issued for One Mile Park south of Pemberton, and several other properties in the area are on evacuation alert due to the out-of-control Signal Hill wildfire.

The Village of Pemberton says the order was issued to give crews safe working space to support wildfire response operations.

The evacuation alert was issued for parts of the village late Wednesday evening.

The Signal Hill wildfire was discovered Wednesday and is believed to be human-caused. As of Thursday morning, it was burning at about 10 hectares, the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) says.

The service says there are 31 active wildfires across the province. Fourteen of these were started in the last 24 hours.

The province says it is bracing for more wildfire activity this week, as warm, dry weather conditions are expected to continue.

“Rising temperatures and low precipitation will further dry out available fuels, increasing the likelihood of wildfire ignition,” the BCWS said.

“Widespread convective activity is anticipated to bring lighting activity this week. While winds are anticipated to ease a little across B.C., strong gusts are expected to accompany thunderstorms as lightning potential increases through the week.”
