The union representing Metro Vancouver’s outdoor workers says there has been “significant movement” in its mediation at the Labour Relations Board, and job action and a full-scale strike are being paused temporarily as talks continue.
Greater Vancouver Regional District Employees’ Union (GVRDEU) president Jesse Medeiros says the pause will continue while the union’s bargaining committee reports back to union members in seeking a mandate.
“Because we are still trying to reach a tentative agreement with Metro Vancouver that we can take back to our members, the full-scale strike is on hold with the hope that further progress can be made,” Medeiros said.
On Friday, the GVRDEU said members were “significantly” escalating their job action, adding time was running out to avoid a full-scale, indefinite strike. Mediation began Saturday.
The union represents more than 750 members who operate and maintain outdoor services, including regional parks and wastewater treatment plants, across the region.
