Burnaby restaurant slammed for covering ‘no tip’ option on payment terminal

A restaurant in Burnaby is being grilled after an image surfaced online, showing it has covered up the “no tip” option on its point-of-sale terminal and the move has people fuming.

The picture shows tipping options of 13 per cent, 15 per cent and 18 per cent. There’s also the dollar amount or percentage option. However, where it would say “no tip,” there’s a black and white sticker covering it with the words “tip” and “thank you.”

The image was posted to the r/mildlyinfuriating page on Reddit.

“That’s the problem with tipping culture, it often revolves around dirty tactics or deceit,” one commenter said.

“That’s a big NO. I’d ask them to remove the sticker. If they didn’t, I’d leave without my food and never return,” another user said.

“I’d press % and 0,” said another Reddit user.

Others called it “brazen,” “ridiculous” and “shady.”

The restaurant at the centre of all of the controversy is Chicken Plus x Sulbing Cafe on Kingsway in Burnaby. CityNews reached out to the restaurant for comment but didn’t receive one.

Some people in the comment section noted there’s a business in Vancouver called Hem 377 that’s done something similar by covering up the no-tip option.

Social media users shared screenshots of the owner, as of four months ago, responding to complaints saying, “You can always ask the cashier to skip the tips. We are happy to skip it. Communication is key.”
