Mounties caught a driver going 138 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.

In September, Richmond Mounties handed out 68 tickets for seatbelt violations.

An RCMP spokesperson said this is a “significant” increase from other months, but it was due to a one-day distracted driving enforcement operation where 25 seatbelt violations were issued.

Typically, Richmond RCMP issue 35 to 40 seatbelt tickets per month.

RCMP has released its September traffic enforcement statistics report, and it highlighted one driver going 138 km/h and another going 111 km/h, both in 50 km/h zones.

In total, RCMP handed out 254 speeding tickets in September. Another notable file was a motorcycle going 151 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.

During their traffic duties, 31 drivers were caught driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and 371 distracted driving tickets were issued.

“Distracted driving, excessive speed and aggressive driving behaviours continue to be among the leading risks on our roadways,” said Cpl. Niels Hermes with the Richmond RCMP’s Road Safety Unit.

Road Safety Unit officers held back-to-school enforcement throughout Richmond, focusing on school zone compliance, seatbelt use, child restraint safety and e-scooter education.

Enforcement and educational initiatives were delivered at schools across the city.

In response to community concerns, officers carried out targeted enforcement at numerous locations, including No. 3 Road, Francis Road, Westminster Highway and Bridgeport Road. Ongoing projects also targeted street racing, loud vehicles, and illegal vehicle modifications.
