Thieves steal hockey gear from Colwood team for players with developmental disabilities

West Shore RCMP are investigating the theft of hockey equipment from the South Island Ravens, a community hockey team that supports players with developmental disabilities.

The theft took place sometime between September 28th and October 19th at the Juan De Fuca Recreation Centre on Island Highway in Colwood.

Police say a large quantity of equipment was stolen from a storage room at the facility.

Among the stolen items were 10 pairs of ice skates, 10 team jackets featuring the Ravens logo, two sets of goalie gear, and two pairs of goalie skates, that has a total estimated value of around $3,500.

“This theft is heartbreaking for our players and families,” said Gus Ascroft, general manager and co-founder of the South Island Ravens Hockey Club.

“Our program is built on community support and inclusion. Losing this gear affects our ability to get players on the ice.”

The South Island Ravens offer players of all ages with developmental disabilities the opportunity to experience the benefits of teamwork and inclusive sport through hockey.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to contact the West Shore RCMP at 250-474-2264 or reach out anonymously through Crime Stoppers online or by calling 1-800-222-8477.
