Richmond MLA charged with criminal offences, removed from BC Conservative caucus

Richmond Centre MLA Hon Chan is facing three charges and will be in court on April 22.

A Richmond BC Conservative MLA has been removed from the party’s caucus due to fact he’s been charged with criminal offences, according to a statement from the party’s interim leader.

“Hon Chan, MLA for Richmond Centre, has been removed from the Conservative Caucus of British Columbia, effective immediately,” reads the statement from interim leader Trevor Halford.

He added Chan had informed him of “serious criminal charges against him” on Wednesday.

The BC Prosecution Service has appointed a special prosecutor to deal with Chan’s case to “avoid any potential for real or perceived improper influence in the administration of justice considering the nature of the allegations and the identity of the accused as an elected public official.”

Andi MacKay KC was appointed on June 27, 2025 as the special prosecutor.

The offences allegedly occurred on Jan. 12, 2024. Chan was elected to the B.C. legislature in the last provincial election, on Oct. 19, 2024, in the Richmond Centre riding.

Chan is being charged with three counts, according to Court Services Online (CSO). These are assault, assault by choking and uttering threats. Chan is listed in CSO by his Chinese name, Hon-Sang Chan.

His first appearance in Richmond Provincial Court is scheduled for April 22.

The BC Conservative caucus had “no knowledge of this matter or any related incidents” before Wednesday, Halford said in the statement and the party took action “immediately.”

BC NDP MLA Grace Lore said it’s “inappropriate” for an MLA facing criminal charges for a violent offence to continue in their position.

“Removing Hon Chan from the caucus is an important first step, but it’s not nearly enough,” she said in a statement.

“The BC Conservatives should call on him to resign immediately and state clearly that he will not be a BC Conservative MLA or candidate in the future.”

It appears the charges were laid on Wednesday, March 25.

●Richmond MLA Hon Chan says he disagrees with the allegations of assault he’s facing in court but says he’s cooperating fully with the police and the court process.

A statement from his office said he is looking forward to “defending himself through the legal process.”

Chan faces three charges: assault, assault by choking and uttering threats.
