Prepare for a big change if you plan to drive between Surrey and New Westminster in the next several days.
The Pattullo Bridge will be closed to all traffic for about a week, starting Friday night, to allow crews to connect the roads to the new stal̕əw̓asəm Bridge.
Drivers aren’t the only ones who may be concerned about this temporary closure, as businesses in New Westminster are also worried about the impact.
Peter Jorgenson with the Downtown New Westminster Business Improvement Area says he is almost resigned to the fact that the work is going to hit them hard, but there is a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel.
Jorgenson says this process has been going on for months, but the result will be a new bridge, and that’s the key.
He has a message for anyone looking to avoid the Royal City with the impending closure of the Pattullo.
“New West is open, and businesses are there, and the great thing is we have two SkyTrain stops right in downtown New West, so it is really easy to SkyTrain and come and hang out in downtown New West too.”
He also notes more hiccups are on the way when the Pattullo Bridge will need to be torn down.
The approximately week-long closure begins Friday at 8 p.m.
