Metro Vancouver gas prices drop while Canadian average increases

Retail gasoline analysts say prices across pumps in Metro Vancouver have fallen again this last week, swimming against the current compared to the rest of the nation.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, says the average price in Vancouver for a litre of regular gas fell 0.6 cents last week, for an average of 166.56 cents per litre.

Comparatively, the average price across Canada rose 0.5 cents in the last week, for an average of 139.41 cents per litre of regular gas.

“Sluggish gasoline demand has led to the national average easing again, and brings back the potential for the national average to drift under 138c/L for the first time since 2021,” De Haan said.

“With a record rise in U.S. gasoline inventories last week as demand was anemic during the holidays, motorists have provided the catalyst for falling prices. However, the better it gets now, the more bumpy and sharp the rise could be ahead of the spring, as prices could start their seasonal rise of 15-35 cents per litre around mid-February.”

Comparing more than 425 gas outlets across Metro Vancouver, GasBuddy says prices in Vancouver on Sunday were more than three cents cheaper than the same day a year ago, and three cents cheaper than a month ago.

The average price in Abbotsford, according to GasBuddy, was 150.32 cents per litre, down almost six cents from last week. Meanwhile, Victoria’s average price for a litre of regular gas was 163.93 cents, down from last week’s average of 166.18 cents.
