BC Ferries increases fares after chaotic long weekend of cancellations, delays

Be prepared to pay more to travel on BC Ferries.

Effective Wednesday, the company’s rates are going up as part of a system-wide annual increase.

A standard vehicle and driver will now have to pay $89, whether at the terminal or booking ahead — up from $75 at the terminal or $85 prepaid.

Foot passengers on major routes must now pay $1 more at $21 per trip.

BC Ferries’ ‘Saver’ fares remain unchanged.

The increase follows a long weekend of delays, cancellations and broken down vessels.

In an interview with 1130 NewsRadio Tuesday, CEO Nicholas Jimenez apologized for the disruptions to customers over what he described as BC Ferries’ “worst moment.”

“Sorry for what happened this weekend. When our ships fail us, we fail our customers,” Jimenez said.

Full details of the fare increases can be found online. BC Ferries always encourages travellers to book ahead to avoid disruptions.
